Through the centuries, there existed jobs that have carried through today. Many of these jobs deal with working alongside people, a customer service if you will. In today's society, such customers service jobs have been at the forefront of helping people get the answers and services they need. In one particular case of customer service that is quite popular, and has been around
for centuries, is being a butler. These individuals provide a service to those that can make a day for someone all the better and adds organization where there's chaos.
When a person thinks of a butler, they automatically think of some older gentleman with an English accent, the perfect posture, amazing ettiquite, and so on and so forth. Well, on the contrary, this might of been how butlers used to be, but now their image is nothing of the sort, except for the suit. The job description of someone who is a butler is simply put as this; an individual who provides the necessary aid and help through the factors related to that of customer service. A butler can work in many different settings, both professional and others that are seen as casual. In a professional atmosphere, a butler can be seen working in a hotel and property management. On a different level of a professional level, there are what is known as a personal butler. And on a different level, there are those that are known as housekeepers and maids who can take both a professional and casual look to the job.
To become a butler that works within hotels and property management, the educational requirements are that of a high school diploma or a GED. Experience in customer service is also considered a high prerequisite. While working for a hotel, they have multiple responsibilities that go beyond just what you see. For starters, the staff of butlers holds meetings every day and night in order to talk about the events that have passed, and those that are coming up. Preparation is discussed and mapped out for those who are attending the hotel and have required certain baggage and door opening services. In some cases, a butler can even be assigned to a person if it is requested. Once these meeting have concluded, their day begins. Some butlers in these particular hotels can work either full-time or part-time. Some people have taken these positions as second jobs. With some hotels, they will have their hotel staffed with butlers twenty four hours, or just through certain hours of the day, it just depends on the hotel and who is there at the time. Generally, you will see butlers at higher end hotels. Their responsibilities start at the door, where they are responsible for opening the door for both coming and going guests. Greeting them appropriately is apart of their ettiquite they must hold. Their uniform is aligned with whatever the hotel management designates as appropriate. Because of this notion, the hotel will always take care of all uniform arrangement for repairs and cleaning. Next, you will see butlers in the hotel lobby who will be responsible for carrying your luggage upstairs. Granted they are also known as bell-men, their responsibilities are nothing short of being a butler. Should your bags be in the car, they are responsible for acquiring them for the guest. Next, depending on the hotel, there is either a butler at the elevator to take you to whatever floor you have to go on, or the bell-man will do it for you. From
here, their services can go from serving food to guests, relaying phone messages, taking care of errands and dry cleaning, arranging for a car to come pick up guests, etc. Their responsibilities and duties go much beyond what is seen just happening at the front door. Depending on a where they work, a butlers salary can reflect in the job that they do in some cases.
When a butler works for a family, they are hired through a firm or on a personal ad that was placed in the paper. There are firms that families are able to go through and find a butler that is certified for such a job of personal measures, which many families do for security reasons. Others get the names of butlers from friends and family members. This is what is known as property management in a sense of butlers, which greatly increases a butler salary. These butlers responsibilities are nearly the same as those who work in hotels, however, they are more involved with the lives of the family they care for. Everything is on a schedule, and they are constantly on call. These butlers are responsible for managing the home when the family is away, or even when they are home. They maintain the cleanliness of the home, tend to the children and parents, schedule appointments as necessary, communicate with their employers on any to all levels that involve scheduling, and they are responsible for the planning of the meals. Now, this is not to say they are responsible for running the entirety of the family, but they do have a responsibility to keep them organized. On a less professional level, there are butlers who are seen more as housekeepers, maids, and those that are even live-in maids. More women take this role, studies show that families trust females over males when it comes to the emotional capacity to be able to handle everything that comes along with living with another family. Plus, there is the idea that a live-in maid and housekeepers have their nurturing side that makes them more trustworthy. Their jobs are still as intense as those who are butlers, in fact, if not more.
The butler salary that is generally seen for those who work in a hotel is $33,000 to $60,000. Those who work under property management have butler salary of $33,000 to $60,000. Now, these numbers vary a great deal because they are based upon all hotels that have butler services, and their numbers can alter the scale at which is being presented. Some make well over $70,000 on in some situations. But is important however, is that this is a service that many people have been thankful for, and benefited greatly from.
